To mark the 120th anniversary of Caziel’s birth, we are delighted to announce a special two-part release of twelve works on paper directly from the artist’s archives. This total curated selection features unseen, unframed pastels dating from two defining chapters of his life: 1963–64 and 1987–88.
We are releasing these works in two distinct drops of six. This first instalment introduces his works from the 1960s, with the second drop scheduled to follow in two weeks’ time. Never before exhibited, individual pieces are priced at £4,500 and offer a rare, intimate glimpse into the evolution of Caziel’s practice.
This initial release encapsulates a vital milestone in both Caziel's life and his artistic direction. Executed between 1963 and 1964, these six earlier works date from his time in Ponthévrard near Paris, where he had established a life with his wife, Catherine, away from the immediate clamour of the city's avant-garde. Here, his practice maintained a sophisticated tension, balancing the remnants of lyrical abstraction with an increasingly powerful structural framework.
These precise pastels directly set the foundation for the striking, geometric abstractions that would define his celebrated solo exhibitions at London’s Grabowski Gallery later that decade. It was this specific mid-60s output that caught the attention of the British art world, reviewed prominently in Arts Review by the famously exacting Surrealist painter and critic Conroy Maddox.
Working in pastel and charcoal afforded Caziel an immediacy of expression. The selected works demonstrate his control of spatial dynamics, balancing a vibrant palette with structural clarity. Released directly from the archives, these authentic works carry impeccable provenance and the Estate would be delighted to advise on framing.
Following these digital releases, Whitford Fine Art will be hosting a further exhibition of Caziel's works on paper at their Brussels gallery in Autumn 2026.
